about

This is an old recording of one of Micheal Shiel's songs (1945-2002). It is a story of Ireland and it's history of emigration. This particular recording is an old tape recording with his brother Padraig Shiel singing vocals. It is the only recorded version that exists.

lyrics

Lyrics

Don't believe in foolish dreams, thats what my daddy told me
On foreign shores your future you must glean
For when i was a boy like you, one day your grandad told me
Crops don't grow on wasteland low and lean

Chorus:

So join the gathering cloud of adolescent mass defection
Like swallows who must fly before full grown
For stumbling statesmen cultivate despair and false direction
Flowers won't bloom where seeds are never sown

Trade your spirit, youth and pride
Your wasted skills and learning
As Ireland loses other nations gain
Your hopes and dreams belong in songs of sentiment and yearning
You have no role, no reason to remain

Chorus:

Let power awake and strive to break this sadness of our nation
And reap the richness of our peoples store.
Don't take the blame, the guilt nor shame
You're destined for migration
Like countless generations lost before
